About

Category theory is a branch of mathematics which seeks to understand abstract mathematical structures and the relationships between them. Originating in investigations of connections between algebra and topology, category theory has broad applications across various branches of pure mathematics, as well as logic, computer science, linguistics and physics.

Categories and Companions Symposium 2022 (CaCS2022) is an event for research students (Honours/Masters/PhD) in category theory and related disciplines from around the world to meet each other and share their work. Everyone is welcome to attend the event. Each day will feature a 50 minute talk by an invited speaker and a series of 20 minute contributed talks by research students, split across two sessions — the first aimed at Australasian and American time zones and the second at Australasian, African and European time zones. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet and talk to each other in smaller groups at various times throughout the symposium.

Registration is now open (for both research students and the wider community) via the linked Google Form. When registering, all research students (Honours/Masters/PhD) are invited to propose a title and abstract for a 20 minute talk in category theory or category theory adjacent topics. Talks about work in progress, and talks by those who usually have fewer opportunities to present internationally, are very welcome and especially encouraged. Upon submitting the registration form, a link titled Edit your response will be presented; talk proposals may be edited using this link up until the registration deadline for speakers. The registration deadline for speakers is Friday, August 19, 2022 23:59:59 Anywhere on Earth. The registration deadline for non-speaking attendees is Friday, September 16, 2022 23:59:59 Anywhere on Earth.

Students of Australian universities may also apply to attend the conference in person at MATRIX in Creswick, Victoria with partially-catered accomodation provided by MATRIX. To do so, when filling out the registration form, please respond Yes to the questions Are you based in Australia? and Are you interested in attending in person?. As places are limited, we ask you to also write a short paragraph explaining why you would like to attend in person. Please submit your registration form before Saturday, July 23 Friday, August 19, 2022 23:59:59 Anywhere on Earth for your application to attend in person to be considered.
